Note: For complete information on summer opportunities, as well as regular employment, at AT&T Labs, see http://www.research.att.com/~academic.
These instructions are abstracted from the ALFP application form on the web. If you wish to apply, you should go back to the application page, and fill out the form provided there to find your resume (if you have already submitted one). If you have not, then you need to do that first, as described on that same page.

First, a word about our procedures:

Once you have submitted a resume over the web, your references will be contacted by email for their reference letters. This request will say that you are applying for a "summer internship." If you plan to apply for the ALFP, please note, as described below, that the same letters will be used for the ALFP application--and we encourage you to let your references know of this dual purpose for their letters. It probably won't influence what they have to say, but it might change the care with which they say it.

Shortly after the application deadline, the ALFP committee will choose a group of finalists, who will be invited for on-site interviews at our labs in New Jersey. Your travel expenses will of course be paid for these trips, and we will endeavor to accomodate your schedule in timing them. However, there is typically a period of three weeks or less during which all finalists must visit. During these visits you will meet with committee members as well as with prospective mentors. It should be noted that not only are we trying to choose the award recipients but also you are trying to choose a mentor during this visit. The mentoring relationship is regarded as one of the key elements of the ALFP award, and it begins with the interview process.

When the visits are complete, the committee then meets to choose the recipients of the fellowships. We typically are trying to finish this process by early March, so that you will know your status in time to influence your choice of graduate schools.

The table of instructions from the application form is displayed below:

In addition to the web form, you will need to send us several other items:
References You are required to send in three letters of reference from professors or other individuals who can give us an evaluation of your technical abilities. You must contact these individuals yourself. They should either mail the letters directly to the program office (below), or they may give you the letter to mail in with your other materials. If you have given us email addresses for the references on your resume you submitted over the web, then we have requested emailed letters of reference. These will take the place of your hard-copy letters in that event, and you need not request additional letters be sent. You should make sure, though, that your references realize that the letters will be used for both purposes.

If you have been previously employed at AT&T, your evaluation from that prior position will automatically be included in your ALFP application materials.

Transcripts We must receive official transcripts from each college or university you have attended. These should each be mailed by the school to the address given below. If you are not sure the transcript will be available by the Jan. 31 deadline, please send us a copy of your transcript so that we can use that until your official one arrives.
GRE scores We must receive your GRE scores, for both the general and subject matter tests, from ETS by the deadline. In general, this means you must register by about the first week of November to take the test in December. Be sure you specify the institution reporting code R2041 for AT&T Labs when you register for the GRE (there may be more than one code for AT&T).
Personal Statement ATTACH A STATEMENT THAT ANSWERS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
Why are you enrolled in your present academic program? How do you intend to use your technical training? Please feel free to supply any other information which may be helpful in assessing your application.

PLEASE NOTE that the best way to submit this statement is to use the web address you were given in your confirming email. That URL communicates directly with the database, and allows you to accomplish the submission entirely on your own. Any other way requires manual intervention, and therefore can take much longer.

The application deadline is January 31.
[Note that we will continue to accept late materials for only a few days after this deadline. Any application materials received after Jan 31 will be included on a "best effort" basis, but there is usually less than a week for late papers to arrive before the finalist selection begins. If you are mailing late, it would be a good idea to use a guaranteed delivery service.]
Mail all hard-copy materials to the following address:
