Internships

We hire a number of summer research interns at AT&T Labs, from all over the country. Most of these interns work with individual members of staff on specific research projects related to the ongoing research program in the organization. Some work in groups, but that is not the norm. The typical internship is 10 weeks during the summer. Students normally give a talk (20-30 minutes) on their work at the end of the summer.

Housing is arranged for the students at nearby universities, and we can also provide some assistance for students searching for housing on their own. If students use the arranged housing, then they should plan to adhere to the related schedules (typically first week of June to mid August, although it varies somewhat with the university schedules). If these schedules are not convenient, or if you prefer, you can arrange your own accomodations, usually by renting a room in a local home or boarding house. Opportunities for short-term apartment rentals are limited in Northern NJ, so that option is not always available.

If you are wondering how you'd fit into our research programs, take a look at the information on this subject on our home page. You'll find that we are engaged in a wide variety of pursuits.

How to Apply
If you want to apply for one of these positions, it is very simple. Applications are accepted from September 1 until early April: but to have the best chance at a position, you should apply before mid-January. Nearly all of our interns apply over the web. As you begin this process, you will need email addresses for your references, so make sure you know these before you start (and make sure they are current!). In fact, it's a good idea to contact your references right now, to let them know that they will be receiving an electronic request for a reference letter from our database. We do not contact your resumes automatically, but requests can be generated by any member of staff at any time after your resume is submitted, so contacting your references before you start might head off some questions.

If the information here does not answer your questions, then you can submit a request for additional information.
