Subject matter expert in applying probabilistic and statistical models to data streams, text mining, analysis and visualization of human/machine dialogs.

I have a long-standing interest in the applications of probabilistic and statistical models to real-world problems.  I was a member of the Engineering Faculty of the University of Bristol in the U.K. from 1978 through 1996, specializing there first in probabilistic models of nonlinear dynamical systems, and then in various aspects of statistical speech processing.  Towards the end of that period I was particularly interested in language modeling for speech recognition, and topic and language identification from speech.  This work led to me joining AT&T Labs in July of 1996 where I am now a Lead Member of Technical Staff.  For the first few years here I was part of the How May I Help You? (HMIHY) team, for which I built the Natural Language Understanding system.  We wanted to go beyond recognizing a customer's speech into an understanding of what they want, in order to engage the customer in a conversation (a dialog), with the aim of completing their transaction within the automation if possible, and if not then transferring them to an agent with the skill-set to help them.  This system was deployed for AT&T Customer Care in 2001, replacing the existing menu system, and was soon handling millions of calls per month.  The question naturally arose, "How well are we doing?".  This led to two further projects.  First to CHI Scan (with Alicia Abella and Dave Kapilow), our IVR (Interactive Voice Response) analysis system, which is now deployed for several AT&T services.  Second to CoCITe, for mining and detecting changes, trends and anomalies within large streams of text data.  This is now deployed not just for analysing customer care data but also for monitoring network security, and most recently for helping to mine Twitter for AT&T-related information.

Projects
CHI Scan (Computer Human Interaction Scan), CHI Scan is a real-time, web-based tool for analyzing call data and customer information in IVR systems. An interactive interface makes it easy to locate events and access, filter, and compare data.

CoCITe – Coordinating Changes in Text, CoCITe is a text mining tool for discovering and flagging unexpected word frequency changes that may be early indicators of serious events.
