Understanding massive data sets is a continuing research challenge, and as the scale of data increases, 2D maps and 3D representations are giving way to more interactive ways of exploring data. In this video, created as part of AT&T’s continuing STEM outreach, researchers commandeer a Kinect to more directly interact with data.


Maria F. Fernández

Subject matter expert in Information management, XML, XML query languages

I am Assistant Vice President of Information and Software Systems Research at AT&T Labs, where I support scientists and technologists whose research advances the design and development of information systems --- with particular focus on the management and visualization of massive data --- and of networked infrastructure --- from cloud to mobile to pervasive computing systems.

My own research sits at the juncture of database systems and programming languages and focuses on domain-specific languages for data management in centralized and distributed environments.  I have co-edited several World-Wide Web Consortium recommendations on XML technologies that have become industry standards.

Currently, I am on the board of directors of the Computing Research Association.  I am also a board member of MentorNet, an e-mentoring program for students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  I am also past Secretary/Treasurer of ACM SIGMOD and a past associate editor of ACM Transactions on Database Systems.

James T. Klosowski

James T. Klosowski received a BS degree in computer science and mathematics from Fairfield University in 1992, and MS and PhD degrees in applied mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1994 and 1998, respectively.  Upon graduating, he joined the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center as a Research Staff Member, working in the areas of interactive computer graphics and scalable visualization.  In 2009, he joined the Information Visualization Research Department as a Principal Member of Technical Staff.  His most recent work focuses on the design of parallel and distributed rendering systems for interactive visualization of large datasets.

Yifan Hu

Yifan Hu received a BSc/MSc in Applied Mathematics from Shanghai Jiao-Tong University in 1985/1988. After a brief period of teaching at Shanghai Jiao-Tong, he went on to receive a Ph.D. in Optimization from Loughborough University in 1992. He worked as a senior scientific officer in Daresbury Laboratory between 1992 to 2001, with a short period working for Computational Dynamics in between. He joined Wolfram Research in 2001, and AT&T Labs in 2007. At present, he is a Principal Member of Technical Staff. His research interests include network/information visualization, machine learning, numerical and combinatorical algorithms and scientific computing. Carlos E. Scheidegger

Subject matter expert in Scientific Visualization, Geometric Processing

Carlos joined AT&T in September 2009, after finishing his PhD at the SCI Institute and the School of Computing, at the University of Utah. In graduate school, he worked in scientific visualization and geometric processing, with applications in mesh generation and point-based surface representations. His thesis work focused on managing the provenance of scientific visualizations: the process in which the users arrive at the visualizations they design. During that period, he was one of the main designers and developers of VisTrails. VisTrails is a new visualization system whose goal is to provide scientists with an infrastructure that helps the exploration process inherent in developing effective visualizations. VisTrails emphasizes the importance of process provenance: it transparently keeps track of the visualizations as they are created.

Valerie Torres

Valerie Torres, Ph.D. is a Senior Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Labs. Her work contributions and responsibilities are manifold. Today, her research interests include web mining, tracking, social media, and business intelligence. Valerie is immersed in exploring, mining and analyzing data. From data, she gets information and from information to business intelligence. She is an active user and contributor of today’s Web 2.0; the world of social media that, for example, allows users to stay connected as well as create and personalize information. She is now looking forward to working on Web 3.0 and beyond.
Valerie works toward bridging the academic gap by proactively promoting and participating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Initiatives, especially in the context of economically challenged communities, and, in particular, Latino/a communities throughout the United States.
