Behzad Shahraray from AT&T Labs Research was elevated to The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Fellow positon in January of 2017 for leadership in content-based processing and retrieval of multimedia information.

The IEEE grade of Fellow which recognizes unusual distinction and extraordinary accomplishments in one of the IEEE fields of interest is awarded to no more than one tenth of a percent of the total IEEE membership each year.

Behzad joined AT&T Bell Labs in 1985. His work on automated video content processing that was conducted in the early 1990s helped bridge the gap between television programs and web content. This work led to the creation of a new research department that he founded and has been leading since 1996. Several technologies that were created by this team have generated the best results in international evaluations. His work has resulted in many video analytics technologies and novel content service ideas for searching, personalizing, summarizing, and repurposing of video content. These are the subject of 120 issued US patents and over 58 technical publications. Behzad is the recipient of AT&T Medal of Science and Technology in 2005 for leadership in content-based indexing, searching, browsing, and display of multimedia information. He also received the AT&T Sparks Award for Technology Transfer for successful transfer of video indexing technologies in 2000.
