Internships & Fellowships

Group Photo for Internships

As part of a long-standing commitment to higher education in science and technology, AT&T Labs offers two programs to graduate students: summer internships and three-year (ALFP) fellowships.

Summer internships

Each summer, research interns from all over the world come to AT&T Labs Research to work with individual technical staff members on research projects for 10 weeks. Learn about one intern's summer experience in Inside the Labs: A Summer Intern Making A Difference.

Students present talks on their work at the end of summer. Applicants for summer internship may be members of an existing university collaboration or may apply as individuals.

Candidates with interest in and experience working on research problems at the graduate level are eligible.

Candidates are typically graduate students, but advanced undergraduates will also be considered in exceptional cases. Click for current research areas.

All other applicants or anyone interested in learning more about internships with AT&T, visit the AT&T employment pages (www.att.jobs) at the corporate website.

Housing is arranged for students at nearby universities. Students using university housing should plan to adhere to the related schedules (typically first week of June to mid August, depending on the university schedules).

If these schedules are not convenient, or depending on preferences, students can arrange their own accommodations, usually by renting a room in a local home or boarding house. (Opportunities for short-term apartment rentals may be limited.) Summer interns pay for their own housing costs; however, AT&T Labs will cover the costs for travel within the United States.

Internship eligibility qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a graduate school program leading to a PhD.
  • Major field must be in computer science, math, statistics, electrical engineering, operations research, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or related fields.
  • Students must have a U.S. social security number.  U.S. citizenship or residency is NOT a requirement.

AT&T Labs Fellowship

The AT&T Labs Fellowship Program (ALFP) offers three-year fellowships to outstanding under-represented minority and women students pursuing PhD studies in computing and communications-related fields. AFLP fellows are partnered with a technical staff member to serve as their mentor for the duration of the program. The program emphasizes personal interaction between the ALFP fellow and and their mentor. For the typical recipient, this personal interaction with a mentor is often the most important component of the program.

The AFLP fellowship, in existence since 1972, was one of the first programs aimed at women and minorities underrepresented in sciences and technology. The completion rate is approximately 75 percent, making it one of the most successful fellowship programs.

In addition to one-on-one mentoring, the fellowship pays all education expenses as well as a living stipend. Each recipient participates in a summer internship the first summer in the program, working in a research team at AT&T Labs Research. Click for current research areas.

The fellowship covers the following: All educational expenses during the school year, including tuition, books, fees, and approved travel expenses. Education expenses for summer study or university research. A stipend for living expenses. Support for attending approved scientific conferences. A summer internship during the student's first summer in the program.

The fellowship is contingent on an annual review demonstrating satisfactory progress toward the PhD degree.

ALFP eligibility qualifications:

  • US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Female or member of a minority underrepresented in science fields (Hispanic, African-American, or Native American).
  • Senior graduating in the current academic year or in their first or second year of grad school.
  • Currently enrolled, or planning to enroll, in a graduate school program leading to a PhD.
  • Major field must be in computer science, math, statistics, electrical engineering, operations research, systems engineering, industrial engineering, or related fields.
