Data Scientist Positions at AT&T Labs Research

The Optimization, Reliability and Customer Analytics (ORCA) department within AT&T Research creates original solutions to some of our Company’s (and industry’s) most compelling and urgent challenges, ranging from network optimization and reliability, to predictive analytics and modeling, Big Data insights, and agile development and analytics solutions prototyping. We are responsible for optimization as well as prototyping for strategic platform elements in AT&T’s Domain 2.0 architecture that leverages cloud technologies, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Software Defined Networking (SDN), to intelligently scale AT&T’s network, enable rapid deployment of advanced cutting-edge features and services, and provide industry leading security, performance and reliability. It’s also an exciting time for ORCA in the area of Big Data analytics as we bring together extensive domain knowledge of business, consumer, mobility and IP services, together with the required technology expertise to harness new business opportunities using Big Data.

We are looking for strong data scientists with a passion for digging into large data sets and extracting knowledge through data analysis, management, and visualization. We work on problems that cut across all aspects of AT&T's business: network and service management, customer analytics, operations research, and other aspects of business analytics. The selected candidate(s) will have opportunities to develop tools that will help AT&T solve real world problems through analytics of massive data sets.

Desired Areas of Expertise:

  • Research background with emphasis on computational statistics, graphics, visualization and/or engineering applications of statistics and data analysis for Big Data.
  • Ability to work well within and between small teams to accomplish data science tasks from data ingestion and cleansing to analysis and presentation.
  • Experience with very large data sets, and the ability to use software to manipulate data and build implementations of ideas.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong combination of data analytic techniques and algorithm skills.
  • Ability to create innovative solutions.
  • Experience in analyzing text streams, documents, social media and big data, with emerging Hadoop-based big data.

Required Qualifications:

  • Entry into this title may require Technical Title Plan (TTP) Board Approval.
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field from an accredited university or a Master’s of Science degree with 3 or more years of technical experience will also be considered to meet job standards.
  • Degrees such as Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science from an accredited university.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with any/all of the following software tools: R, Python, Perl, Java, JavaScript, Linux, XML, SQL, and Linux Shell Scripts.
  • Experience with modern data management systems: Hadoop, NoSQL, Spark, and Tez.

Selection Process

During your visit, you will give a one-hour lecture on your research and meet with technical staff members individually or in small groups.
