Optimization for Network and Virtualized Services Research at AT&T Labs Research

The Optimization, Reliability and Customer Analytics (ORCA) department within AT&T Research creates original solutions to some of our Company’s (and industry’s) most compelling and urgent challenges, ranging from network optimization and reliability, to predictive analytics and modeling, Big Data insights, and agile development and analytics solutions prototyping. We are responsible for optimization as well as prototyping for strategic platform elements in AT&T’s Domain 2.0 architecture that leverages cloud technologies, Network Function Virtualization (NFV), and Software Defined Networking (SDN), to intelligently scale AT&T’s network, enable rapid deployment of advanced cutting-edge features and services, and provide industry leading security, performance and reliability. It’s also an exciting time for ORCA in the area of Big Data analytics as we bring together extensive domain knowledge of business, consumer, mobility and IP services, together with the required technology expertise to harness new business opportunities using Big Data.

We are looking to expand our Research and Development staff in the area of optimization. Example tasks may include SDN network design, planning and visualization analytics; performance, reliability, forecasting for SDN and NFV applications; SDN and NFV application analytics; SDN traffic engineering optimization; SDN-enabled services control algorithms; optimization, event detection (e.g. capacity, attacks, overloads) & control actions for virtualized services; optimal infrastructure placement; economics and pricing for virtualized infrastructure; performance, capacity, and reliability modeling and optimization for advanced services that will be virtualized; performance and reliability improvement recommendations; models that optimize a distributed cloud implementation of virtualized services.

Desired Areas of Expertise:

  • Candidate must have strong background in mathematical optimization, probability theory and stochastic modeling, performance, reliability, and capacity analysis.
  • Strong verbal communication along with excellent technical documentation and presentation skills.
  • Strong collaboration skills.
  • Ability to create innovative solutions.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member

Required Qualifications:

  • Entry into this title may require Technical Title Plan (TTP) Board Approval.
  • A Ph.D. in a relevant field from an accredited university or a Master’s of Science degree with 3 or more years of technical experience will also be considered to meet job standards.
  • Degrees such as Applied Mathematics, Operations Research, Statistics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science from an accredited university.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Applied telecommunications research experience is a plus, including knowledge of IP networking and services.
  • Knowledge of SDN, NFV, Cloud and Distributed Computing optimization are desirable.
  • Domain knowledge of mobility and IMS is desirable.
