Research Positions in Networking, Systems and Service Quality Management

AT&T is currently embarking on a transformative initiative towards intelligent services by leveraging cloud technologies and Software Defined Networking (SDN). This modern architecture will simplify and scale AT&T’s network to help support the continued growth of Internet traffic, enable rapid deployment of advanced cutting-­‐edge features and services, and provide industry leading security, performance and reliability. This initiative opens up exciting opportunities for researchers to explore how networks and services should be designed, operated, and managed at scale, both for technology deployments in AT&T’s networks and to influence the broader communications industry.

We are looking for exceptional candidates in the broad area of networking and systems. Of particular interest are candidates with backgrounds in the areas of cloud computing, virtualization, software defined networking (SDN), mobile computing, service quality management, and large-­‐volume stream analytics systems. Some specific topics of expertise include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Software-­‐Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Network Virtualization (NV)
  • Design and management for SDN and cloud environments
  • Service Quality Management for cloud-­‐based services and beyond, including service monitoring, rapid fault localization, troubleshooting, and service impact quantification technologies
  • Data mining and analytics (big data), particularly for Service Quality Management
  • Runtime adaptive control and optimization in a cloud environment
  • Cross-layer analytics and design in a mobile, virtualized, and SDN-controlled world, ensuring that applications and services are designed and managed to make efficient use of resources from an end-to-end perspective.

Outstanding individuals with a Ph.D. or equivalent in computer science, engineering, or applied sciences at all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in research, a collaborative spirit, strong communication skills, software and systems expertise, and show a passion for finding solutions to real world problems. Experience with technologies such as Open Source control and management software, OpenStack, VMware, and KVM is a plus. Successful candidates will engage in inventing novel solutions and techniques, analyzing large-scale network and services data, exploring architectural or operational enhancements, and demonstrating the effectiveness of the solution through rapid prototyping and deployment.

Selection Process

Note that candidates' applications and credentials are reviewed throughout the recruiting season. During this time, you may receive an email or phone call from a technical staff member to discuss your application. At that time or at a later date, you may receive an invitation to interview in person. An interview visit is typically one to two days in length. During your visit, you will give a one-hour lecture on your research and meet with technical staff members individually or in small groups.
