{Cloud services are compelling to customers from many perspectives, but the immense benefits come at a price. Along with reliability and security, performance is the Achilles heel of Cloud services. In order to make Cloud services profitable, the Cloud service provider obviously must overbook physical resources. But at what level of resource overbooking (OB) does performance begin to suffer? The answer, of course, depends on many factors. In this paper, we present a simple analytic model to quantify the performance impact of overbooking virtualized resources as a function of the relevant environment and usage parameters. We then validate those analytic modeling results against simulation, lab tests, and field data. Finally, we propose a simple means for measuring the model parameters in the field, in order to use the analytic model to determine allowable OB factors (engineering rules) while still meeting performance constraints and service-level agreements.}

A system and method for identifying computer system performance signatures and for identifying the cause of undesirable performance signatures, particularly with respect to both application-based and computer system-based parameters. Respective parametric information data is matched with corresponding parameters found in a stored plurality of reference signatures. If a match is found between the behavior of a computer system under study and a reference signature, the present invention provides information about the cause(s) of the reference signature, such that appropriate remedial measures can be taken. If a match is not found (according to predetermined matching rules), then the present invention may provide additional prompts to request additional information or test data such that the signature of computer system being tested can be further refined so that the signature of the target computer system might more closely match a reference signature

A method and apparatus for modeling a web server is described. The web server is modeled by identifying a plurality of sub-systems for the server. Each sub-system is represented as a queue, with each queue operably coupled to one another. An arrival rate and a service time is iteratively adjusted for each queue to account for performance by the other queues.
