Steven will discuss a software package he developed with Miro Dudik and Rob Schapire for predicting species distributions. It is based on the principle of maximum entropy, and models and maps species distributions based on occurrence data (for example, from natural history museum collections) and gridded environmental data. Recent large trials have shown that it performs well in comparison to other methods used for the same task; it is becoming widely used, and has been downloaded from over 60 countries. He'll focus on its application for conservation planning in Madagascar. Some more info is here.
